Founded in 1977,
Damanhur is a Federation of Communities and Regions, situated in Valchiusella
Valley, in the Alpine foothills of northern Italy. Damanhur has over 800
citizens, of which more than 500 reside in The Valley itself. Damanhur has its
own social and political structure, a constitution, a multitude of diverse
economic activities including its own currency, schools and a daily
newspaper. Since the 1980’s Damanhur has minted several coins and banknotes, in
gold, silver, red and white clay, paper and parchment. The use of the Credit is
regulated and managed by the Damanhur Association.
The information
on types, varieties & mintages is based on my email correspondence with Mr.
Erik V. McCrea and Mr. Walter Giuliani and on the information on the old (and
now sadly defunct) Damanhur website, which showed many of the coins and the
banknotes in their full glory. The new Damanhur site only lists the modern
machine struck euro-based coins. My thanks for all the information go to these
two gentlemen and to the Federation of Damanhur.
