REPUBBLICA DEL NORD (NORTHERN REPUBLIC / UNIONE DEL NORD / LEGA NORD):

The Lega Nord (Northern League) is a political movement that advocates autonomy for Northern Italy. It is a personality-driven party led by Umberto Bossi. The Lega Nord presents a merger of the various regional movements including the Lombard League and the League of Venice. The movement was founded in 1989, and was part of Silvio Berlusconi's government in 1994. In 1996 the movement announced that its aim was the independence of Northern Italy, under the name Padania.

The coins for the Repubblica del Nord were minted before the declaration of independence in 1996, under the auspices of the local regional movements and of the central Lega Nord movement. The loose federation between the local movements of the association has resulted in an outburst of creativity leading to a broad & fascinating diversity of designs and varieties in the coins. Many of the issues are rare and difficult to acquire.
