The Crozet Archipelago is part of the French Southern and Antarctic
Territories — Terres Australes
et Antarctiques Françaises
(TAAF), which also includes Kerguelen Islands, Terre Adélie, and the tiny islands of Amsterdam
and St-Paul.
The coins of Crozet
are private pattern fantasy issues minted by mr.
Fred Zinkann, who has pioneered the striking of coins in many
non-conventional metals. Mr.
Zinkann sells the coins via eBay, using the nom-de-plume “equillink”.
There are two die
varieties of the Crozet patterns: An earlier type with high relief and a
later type with low relief. The high relief coins were minted in: Silver,
Nickel and Brass, and there are one of each in Gold and Iridium. After
minting the Iridium coin, the high relief die broke. After the dies broke, Mr.
Zinkann chose to mint the remaining blanks with a low relief die, to reduce
the risk of die breakage. Unfortunately a low relief obverse die broke as
well and had to be replaced, the new obverse die being similar to the first
one, but somewhat fuzzier with weaker lettering and the eyes of the rooster
being less deep set. The tantalum coins were all minted with the newer die.
