Terre Adélie of the
French Southern and Antarctic Territories — Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF), which also includes Kerguelen Islands, the Crozet Archipelago, and the tiny islands of Amsterdam/St-Paul.
The coins of Adélie
are private pattern fantasy issues minted by mr.
Fred Zinkann, who has pioneered the striking of coins in many
non-conventional metals. While mr. Zinkann had
plans to mint many more varieties of this coin in diverse rare metals
(amongst others rhenium), the dies broke during the minting of the fourth
iridium coin, putting the minting to a halt. Mr. Zinkann sells the coins via eBay, using the
nom-de-plume “equillink”.
